The West African Society of Toxicology (WASOT) invites nominations for the esteemed positions of Fellow and Honorary Fellow. These prestigious awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of toxicology, particularly in the West African sub-region. WASOT Fellows are elected for life through a rigorous peer review process on the basis of excellence in their publication record, innovations, leadership roles, and contributions to policy and society. 
 
Nomination Requirements:
 
1. Fellow:
The title of Fellow is awarded to active, long-standing members of WASOT in recognition of their distinguished professional achievements and service to the Society and the field.
 
1.1 Eligibility Criteria for Fellow:
 
• ⁠Membership: Must be a current, paid-up Full Member of WASOT for a minimum of ten (10) consecutive years..
• Contributions: Demonstrated significant contributions to the field of toxicology, particularly in West Africa.
• Professional Standing: Must have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of professional experience in toxicology or a closely related field post-terminal degree (e.g., PhD, MD, DVM).
• Geographic Contribution: Must have made significant contributions to the advancement of toxicology within the West African region.
• ⁠Research: Published research papers in reputable scientific journals.
• Service:  Active participation in WASOT activities and events.
 
 
Nominees for Fellow must demonstrate sustained excellence and leadership in at least three (3) of the following areas:
 
I. Research and Scholarship:
• A distinguished record of peer-reviewed scientific publications in national and international journals.
• Evidence of innovative research that has advanced the science of toxicology.
• Securing competitive research grants and leading successful research teams.
 
II. Teaching and Mentoring:
• A history of excellence in teaching toxicology at undergraduate or postgraduate levels.
• Successful mentorship of students, interns, or early-career toxicologists.
• Development of educational curricula, courses, or materials in toxicology.
 
 III. Professional Practice and Leadership:
• Significant contributions to regulatory toxicology, risk assessment, or public health policy.
• Leadership roles in governmental, industrial, or consulting bodies where toxicological expertise is vital.
• A proven track record of applying toxicology to solve real-world problems in West Africa (e.g., chemical safety, poison control, environmental remediation).
 
IV.  Service to WASOT and the Broader Scientific Community:
• Sustained and significant service to WASOT (e.g., serving on Council / Executive, chairing committees, organising scientific meetings, representing WASOT internationally).
• Active participation in the work of other national or international scientific societies.
• Editorial responsibilities for reputable scientific journals.
 
2. Honorary Fellows:
 
The title of Honorary Fellow is conferred on individuals of exceptional distinction in toxicology or a related science who are not members of WASOT but whose work has had a profound impact on the field, particularly as it relates to the goals and mission of WASOT. This may include eminent international scientists, esteemed public servants, or visionary leaders.
 
 
 
2.1. Eligibility Criteria for Honorary Fellow:
 
• Membership: Not required to be a member of WASOT.
• Professional Standing: Must have achieved preeminence in the field of toxicology, public health, environmental science, or science policy through sustained, high-level accomplishment.
 
2.1 Basis for Nomination for Honorary Fellow:
 
Nominees for Honorary Fellow should have:
• A record of monumental contributions to toxicological science that aligns with the interests of West Africa.
• Provided exceptional service or support that has significantly advanced the mission and visibility of WASOT.
• Played a pivotal role in shaping national or international policies related to toxicology and chemical safety.
• Demonstrated a long-standing commitment to fostering scientific capacity and collaboration in West Africa.
• Distinguished Contributions: Individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of toxicology, particularly in West Africa.
• International Recognition: Recognized internationally for their work in toxicology.
• ⁠Mentorship: Demonstrated mentorship and support for young scientists in toxicology.
 
4.0. Submission: Submit the nomination package to the WASOT Secretariat.
 
4.1 Nomination Process for Both Categories:
A complete nomination package must be submitted as a single PDF file to info@wasot.org by the deadline of 28th November 2025. The package must include:
 
i. Nomination Form: Complete the nomination form, providing detailed information about the nominee’s qualifications and contributions.
ii. Nominating Letter (Primary): A detailed letter from the primary nominator (max. 2 pages) that: 
· Clearly states the category (Fellow or Honorary Fellow) for which the candidate is being nominated.
· Summarizes the candidate’s qualifications and provides a compelling case for election, explicitly referencing the criteria listed in Section 1.1 or 2.1.
 
iii. Seconding Letter: A supporting letter from the second nominator, endorsing the nomination and adding complementary perspectives.
iv. Additional Letters of Support (Optional but Recommended): Up to two (2) additional letters from other distinguished scientists who can attest to the nominee’s qualifications.
v. For Fellow Nominations Only: Proof of the nominee’s ten (10) consecutive years of WASOT membership (e.g., membership number and statement from the Secretariat).
vi. ⁠Supporting Documents: Attach supporting documents, including:
    – CV or resume
    – List of publications
    – Letters of recommendation (2-3)
 
5. Selection and Election
 
• The WASOT Fellows Selection Committee will review all complete nomination dossiers.
• The Committee will evaluate nominees based on the evidence provided in relation to the published criteria.
• Recommendations from the Committee will be presented to the WASOT Governing Council for a final vote.
• A maximum of seven (7) Fellows and three (3)Honorary Fellows may be elected in any given year.

• Nomination Deadline: 28th November 2025
• Notification of Applicants: 20th December 2025
• Announcement of New Fellows: At the WASOT Annual Conference, February 2026.
